How Bing Maps may help with efforts to handle delays in accessing important maternal health services

Every year, 295,000 girls die from preventable causes linked to pregnancy and childbirth globally. naija news for a massive 23% of those deaths. Every one is a needless disaster, and avoiding them must be a global priority.

How can we achieve this? Study indicates that prompt use of seven important maternity services, together known as disaster obstetric treatment, may reduce deaths of expectant mothers by 15-50% and the deaths of these unborn kids by 45-75%.

Pregnant women have an increased threat of dying should they knowledge some of three delays in accessing this treatment when they need it. These include a wait in choosing to get treatment, a wait travelling to correct health facilities, or perhaps a wait in obtaining the treatment they want when they get there.

In Nigeria, oahu is the wait in traveling to receive treatment that’s the most life-threatening, with many girls remaining to travel to health facilities sometimes by themselves or with support of these family members, without qualified help. This journey is considered as a “dark box” since unravelling what happened in their vacation, including delays experienced while durante option, can only just be analysed following it is too late.

The offer of Bing Maps
What if we’re able to use Bing Maps, the most used navigation app in the world, to help realize these delays? In a recently printed study, my colleagues and I assessed vacation time to take care of pregnant feamales in disaster scenarios using data from Bing Maps.

We applied the vacation time estimates we found to assess the insurance of important maternity services in Nigeria’s most urbanised state and the biggest city in sub-Saharan Africa – Lagos.

Bing Maps data can help us realize pregnant women’s journeys to clinic for disaster care. Bing Maps
Our benefits revealed that for women who went straight to a clinic, vacation time ranged from 2 to 240 minutes. For individuals who gone there after having a affiliate, vacation time ranged from 7 to 320 minutes. Total vacation time was within 60 moments for 80% of pregnant women. The time of day and having been introduced were equally connected with traveling a lot more than 60 minutes.

We identified three locations from which expectant mothers went a lot more than 60 moments to community hospitals in Lagos. These parts were Alimosho/Ifako-Ijaiye, Eti-Osa and Ijanikin/Morogbo. In cases whenever a affiliate was needed, we identified a next hotspot in the north of Ikorodu, wherever expectant mothers needed a lot more than 60 moments to arrive at a clinic that might provide the treatment they need.

Reducing locations
Our conclusions show these locations require government treatment to reduce delays in girls accessing care. The Lagos state government already is apparently approaching one of these brilliant locations by making the Eti-Osa Maternal and Child Treatment Centre.

Similar action is needed to address the Ijanikin/Morogbo hotspot, as there’s currently number community clinic for approximately 30 km to the east and west of this cluster.

For Alimosho/Ifako-Ijaiye and north of Ikorodu, there are recognized community hospitals within these parts already and it seems the process may be their general inaccessibility. In these parts, path growth and fix and the development of affiliate methods could work approaches to minimize vacation time.

Our study reinforces existing evidence that expectant mothers face significant issues in accessing disaster care. Even yet in places that are estimated to really have the therefore named “urban advantage”, pregnant feamales in urgent scenarios however have to handle traffic congestion, poor roads and gradual affiliate systems.
